From humble beginnings in 1929 when Richard "Doc" Farmer started a small business to reclaim and clean rags for local factories, Cintas has grown to clothe more than 5 million people for work every day.
Herschell Farmer became president of the company in 1952 after his father's death and, after 23 years of continued success, turned the helm over to his son, Richard. The company entered the uniform rental business in 1965, a move that would dramatically reshape the company and revolutionize the uniform marketplace. For example, Cintas was the industry pioneer in introducing polyester-cotton blend fabric that doubled the life of uniforms and made cleaning more efficient.
In 1983, the company made its initial public offering of stock.
Scott Farmer, the fourth generation of the Farmer family, currently serves as Chief Executive Officer.
Today Cintas is the largest uniform supplier in North America, with more than 800,000 clients. The company has more than 400 facilities across North America, including 11 manufacturing plants and eight distribution centers employing more than 34,000 people.
Fortune magazine listed Cintas among America's "Most Admired" companies, marking the eighth consecutive year the company appeared on the prestigious list. Cintas also maintains one of the most loyal employee bases in the industry, helping the company record its 39th consecutive year of growth in sales and earnings in FY 2008.
